Democrat Could Be 1st Muslim in Congress...
Democrat Could Be 1st Muslim in Congress

Given the current political climate, this is bound to become a "big thing." I don't know much about the guy, but assuming the best, for the moment, it would be nice to have a prominant Progressive Muslim in our government.

In general, I'd like to see more variety in Congress. The legislative branch is in essence supposed to represent the masses, but Congress looks a hell of a lot more homogenous than the general population.

I'm not one to demand variety for the sake of variety, but I think it can only help matters to get people from as many different backgrounds as possible into our system. It keeps our country delightfully viril. It also has the potential to encourage immigrant populations that may have otherwise felt isolated and unrepresented (as suggested by the article).

Yeah... that ain't never gonna happen in this country. :\

'Cause everyone knows that atheists are all irreligious (and therefore immoral) and can't be trusted. Unlike all our fine, upstanding Christian bureaucrats.

yeah, i was just going to say something similar. I don't believe for an instant that over half of our politicians even think about God or WWJD in making any of their decisions.

Yeah, its all just scoring points with the traget demographics. I wish our politicians were more honest about their beliefs and views. I might not agree with them, but I'd have far more respect for them, and be less worried about the state of our system. :\

why not just send only the extremists into congress and consider compromises?

or is that too much of "the crazies takin' over"?

don't listen to me I'm an idiot.

If the definition of "the center" is "the point between the greatest extremes" then by mapping the fringes of society you should be able to extrapolate the center of public opinion.
yes, that would be the median and not the mode or average, but hey, I'm an idiot and a raving loony.

but consider that america is currently run by "conservatives" and think about what if they let the Acknowledged Extremists run the country...
