Church fires woman... for being a woman.
Sunday school teacher dumped for being female

They say they are adopting a more LITERAL interpretation of the Bible:

The First Baptist Church dismissed Mary Lambert on August 9 with a letter explaining that the church had adopted an interpretation that prohibits women from teaching men. She had taught there for 54 years.

If this be the case, I would hope that, in the name of consistancy, they start stoning their children when they get out of line (Deuteronomy 21:18-21).

This of course being the problem with most AmeriChristians -- they pick and choose what to take literally, what to take figuratively -- what to follow and preach, and what to ignore. Is it the infalliable word of God, or what?

yes, I know there are some pretty whacked out Baptist churches. Im happy to say our church has many female teachers and also has had female speakers.

It always ends up that the head of the church or a church leader has an 'issue' he needs to deal with but instead takes it out on their church.

If God granted free will to all people and God is omnipotent and therefore knows all wouldn't it be correct to assume that to properly allow us the ability to use our free will he would have to step aside and not meddle in our lives?

And if that's the case, would it also not be possible that Lucifer, the angel loved most above all others, was also granted free will and sent to earth to remind us that we have a choice?

What has Lucifer ever done but offer a choice to humans? You can eat the apple or not. You could come down from that cross and live a normal life - you don't have to sacrifice yoruself like this for them. Go ahead, get the chocolate glazed donut with extra fat, you know it tastes better.

Do you believe that Lucifer always offers the "bad" choice? You could kill him, or you could let him go. You could buy the new Mercedes that will replace the one you purchased a year ago or you can donate that money to AIDS research and continue driving the car you have.

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe that Lucifer is always in our heads giving us choices. We know the choices we have. After all, we're our own worst enemies.

Micah

You are walking about the classic explaination of why God allows evil in the world -- He truly values the individual free will, and for that there must be a choice for us each to make -- even if that choice is not in our best interests -- even if it goes against Him.

Also a somewhat related argument for maximizing individual freedoms in civilized society.

Can one truly be called a good and moral person if they are not ever given the option of doing stupid, hateful things?

Lucifer is an archaic concept, particularly if you're a hardcore christian type. He is a force who opposes God's will.

And what can oppose God's will? NOTHING.

Lucifer is one thing: a concept created to help explain away those silly questions about why there's evil in the world if God truly loves us. Lucifer is used to make us see that what feels right to us, and what truly makes us feel alive and not like mindless, robotic sheep, is evil and counterproductive to our spiritual cleanliness.

I don't believe this is reserved just for America. Look at Ireland and the wars between protestants and catholics. Heck that was going on all over the place.

And it isn't just relative to Christianity. If there is one thing I have learned it is that a high percentage of human kind can be rather stupid. It's just how we all learn how to get along and put up with each others oddness.

EXACTLY!

As I always like to say, "Stupid is everywhere." I was making a specific reference to Christian legalism here in America, but there is no doubt that similiar things take place in every country, in every religion -- it knows no borders.

The more cynical amoungst us might then suggest that religion causes more problems than it's worth...

I never go to those things... as I get nothing useful out of them... and from what I hear about the local ones, I'm certainly not missing anything... my support group is my friends here and I couldn't ask for a better one!

Than you understand what I mean, sometimes it doesnt have to be religion to cause some really irritating things to go on. Everyone has their own views, philophies, etc... and we all stand by them and eventually get into chats, debates, etc...

I use to moderate a trans support group of close to 400 people. Did it for 3 years. Talk about burn out. Argh

Hehe... well at my most cynical moments, I would definately agree, in a sense. I think organized religion can be quite the breeding ground for fearful ignorance and general foolishness. Many times such structures demonize modernity and independant, critical, ration thought -- discouraging the individual and glorifying conformity.

But, on the flip site, I know far too many people who hold religious views who do not show such mindless qualities. Often these individuals being the same sorts that distances themselves from the exploitive organizations I describe above. My wife being the best example of this.

Nope, it's the convenient word of God. So much easier to follow, 'cause you only have to remember the stuff you care about, instead of that whole cumbersome book! :D

A 'friend' of mine in the DI crew (I think I've told you about DI, that's the goth club I frequent down here in MA) is a prime example of an ignorant americhristian. He hates pagans and wiccans for they are satanists and he hates gays because they are immoral and satanists.

I should add a footnote to that last comment: He hates MALE gays, but he's perfectly fine with lesbians doing their lesbian thing, particularly when he's trying to get his girlfriend to do the bisexual thing with him and this girl he was cheating on her with. Which brings us to another of his hypocrisies: premarital sex. And 'sodomy', too.

But I guess sodomy is fine as long as its a girl polishing his knob, not a guy taking it in the ass.
